GB2RS AMATEUR RADIO NEWS BROADCAST
----------------------------------
This information is prepared by the Radio Society of Great
Britain and broadcast each Sunday on the 80, 40, and 2 metre bands
by stations in all parts of the country.
This is the GB2RS news broadcast for the week commencing
Sunday, 2nd November.
SATELLITE NEWS
--------------
AMSAT-UK tell us that OSCAR 10 may, after all, be recoverable.
Because its batteries have retained some of their charge, the
beacons on 145.910 and 145.972MHz can still be heard, with signal
strength varying between 5/7 and 5/9. The satellite is currently
going into an eclipse phase which is expected to drain the remaining
power from the batteries. It is expected to emerge from this phase
by about 23rd December and AMSAT are hopeful that a few days of
sunlight might permit the entry of new programs.
The Japanese satellite Fuji (OSCAR 12) contains 70cm
transponders. SSB and CW facilities are already available but the
transponder for digital information is not yet switched on. The PSK
1200 baud beacon is expected to be activated for the time being,
possibly within the first week of November.
Search and rescue equipment on the American satellite NOAA 10
was responsible for the location of a crashed Canadian aircraft on
its first day of operation. It proved so accurate that a medical
team was parachuted straight to the spot, from where the injured
were taken to hospital.
A 50MHz activity night has been suggested for Friday nights,
between the hours of 7:00pm and midnight. It is hoped that this will
provide a focal point for activity within the band. Stations using
upper sideband are invited to make CQ calls around 50.200MHz.
The 28MHz phone cumulative contests start tomorrow (3rd
November). They will continue on successive Monday nights until 5th
December. The rules may be found in the September issue of Radio
Communication.
The Bridgend and district ARS will be holding a rally on Sunday
9th November. It will take place at the Bridgend Recreation and
Leisure Centre, Angel Street, Bridgend, Mid-Glamorgan. Talk-in will
be on S22 and the doors open at 10:30am. All are welcome. Further
details from GW1OUP on 0656 723508.
SPECIAL EVENT STATIONS
----------------------
GB0WKS - throughout November, to celebrate Cub Scout
Anniversary. The station will be most active on HF, using CW, from
Tunbridge Wells. It's worth 5 points for the West Kent ARS award.
GB4DHX - on Saturday and Sunday, 8th and 9th November, run by
the Dunfirmline RS. The station will be located at the Dunfirmline
Hobbies and Recreation Exhibition, Pittencrieff Park. Special QSL
cards will be issued for contacts on 80, 40, 20 and 2 metres.
GB0HGJ - on Sunday 16th November. Located at Bracknell, it will
celebrate Honeywell's 50th anniversary. It will operate from 0900 to
1600 hours on 3.690, 7.029, 14.290 and 144.290MHz using SSB and CW.
Further details from Tim Elsey G8WIW on Bracknell 416900 during
working hours.
An RSGB Microwave Round Table is to be held at Martlesham, near
Ipswich on Sunday 9th November. Tickets are available from:-
Dave Robinson,
15 Ferry Lane,
Felixtowe.
For security reasons, no tickets will be available at the gate.
SOLAR FACTUAL DATA
------------------
The period 20th to 26th October has seen the most dramatic
solar activity for a very long time. All the signs point to the
possibility that we have passed solar minimum. It will be another
month before we can be certain, but the omens are all favourable.
The sunspot count has climbed up to the eighties. There are now
three active spot groups on the sun, with energy levels high enough
to sustain major flares up to 2B/M5 level. A 10 centimetre flare of
1300 flux units, lasting for 89 minutes was recorded on the 19th and
there was also a sudden ionospheric disturbance. Activity of this
level has not been reported since about November 1983.
Solar flux levels have climbed all the week and peaked at 99 on
the 23rd, the highest level since last February. They are now
averaging 90 units, against the 67's of recent weeks.
The geomagnetic A index has been dropping steadily from an
unsettled level of 16 units to the very quiet level of only 2 by the
24th. From the 24th to the 26th we have had the quietest magnetic
period since November 1983.
The overall effects have seen excellent conditions on the
higher HF bands. 21MHz has been open to VK, ZL and the USA. On the
26th, G3OSS maintained a solid copy QSO with W0OM at Boulder for two
hours on this band. Signals were up to S9.
The INDA index for the period 13th to 19th October was
unsetled. The particle input from the solar wind has been
negligible.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (ENGLAND & WALES)
----------------------------------
The Appleton F2 critical frequency daily highs have steadily
climbed, from 6.9MHz on the 20th to 7.8MHz by the 26th. These are
the best levels for over a year. It is too early to say whether they
will be maintained but last winter's general decline in levels looks
like being reversed this year. The normal seasonal improvement looks
a strong possibility for this winter.
The darkness hour lows have not changed much, but tended to
decline due to seasonal changes. They are now averaging 2.3MHz.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (SCOTLAND & NORTHERN IRELAND)
-----------------------------------------------
F2 critical frequencies at South Uist have risen from 5.7MHz on
the 20th up to 6.9MHz by the 26th, the best level since last
February. Together with the very quiet geomagnetic conditions and
lower noise levels, the HF bands are beginning to improve. The
darkness hour lows have not changed and averaged 1.6MHz. They have
remained steady since last August. Spread F is still about on most
early mornings.
The RSGB has been advised that, for the moment, all the beacons
on Cyprus are off the air. We have no information why, but will keep
listeners advised of any change in the situation.
Those wishing to visit RSGB headquarters should now find their
journey eased considerably as the final stretch of the M25, linking
it to the M1, is now open.
The Post Office has informed the Society that the latest
callsigns issued as of Wednesday 29th October were in the G0FX and
G1WJ series.
